Manchester United’s Wout Weghorst has said he is open to extending his loan spell at the club.

Weghorst, 30, scored his first goal for United in their 3-0 Carabao Cup first-leg win over Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.

The striker moved to United earlier this month on loan from Burnley until the end of the season, ending his temporary spell at Besiktas early in the process.

And coach Erik ten Hag has started Weghorst in all three games for which the Dutch international has been available since his arrival.

“I’ve seen in the first few days, almost a week, how big the club is,” Weghorst said after the win at Forest, “in everything; facilities, the club, even the quality of the team, the way to play

“There’s a lot of quality in everything and that’s something you look to work in, in a winning environment.

“I think the first week has gone well and it’s up to me to offer and contribute and help the team as best I can. I’m pretty sure I can play a role.

Asked if he was trying to put in the head of Ten Hag the idea that he can contribute beyond the summer, Weghorst answered: “Of course, this is the situation now as it was, it was for a loan.

“It’s a huge club, so I’ll try to do everything as well as I can and if it comes out, it will be a good option.”
