Mauricio Pochettino hits out at Daniel Levy insisting Tottenham chief failed to back his bid to halt slide

MAURICIO POCHETTINO took a swipe at Daniel Levy after claiming he was not given the right “support” to turn things around at Tottenham.

The Argentine coach was axed by Spurs in November, despite transforming the underachieving side into Champions League finalists.

Mauricio Pochettino believes he would have survived at Spurs if Daniel Levy had backed him in the transfer market

His final few months of a five-and-a-half year spell in North London saw a major drop in form.

And although Poch admitted it was the right decision from the club, he believes he could have recovered had owner Levy backed him more financially.

Asked whether he regretted not breaking his Spurs deal to manage then-interested Real Madrid, Pochettino said: “I was happy at Tottenham and I signed a contract.

“We finished very well, the relationship is impeccable. I always say, we too made mistakes that led to what happened.

“Although we did expect a little more support or reassurance to reverse the situation.

“But the club line was going another way and there was wear — respite was needed from both sides.”

Speaking to Spanish paper El Pais, he added: “We live in a ‘resultist’ environment where it seems that all the things that have a good result are the ones that serve. But how do you measure what works or not?

“After the Champions League final, four years in the top four, two years without a signing, a different management strategy was needed.

“Sometimes the vision of a coaching staff is not accepted by the club management.

“We anticipate what could happen. You need to fall, be down and then go up.”

Pochettino, 48, also hinted at where his next job could be, with Europe’s top five leagues all in the mix.

Asked what he will be looking for in his new role, he said: “It is to find a club that  goes hand in hand with the ideas we have and that we believe can bring you closer to success.

“When that offer arrives, we will all say yes.

“We adapt well to the Premier League but we are open to new challenges.”
