A Secret Weapon for Tamworth

Tom Tonks is not your average footballer. Known for his incredible long-throws that can outpace most kicks, Tonks is gearing up to put Huddersfield to the test in the FA Cup at The Lamb tonight. The 33-year-old has quickly become a fan favourite, thanks to his knack for scoring stunning long-range goals that have taken social media by storm.

Throwing it Back to Rory Delap

Much like former Stoke City midfielder Rory Delap, who popularised long-throws during his time in the Premier League, Tonks has made a name for himself in the National League. Reflecting on his unique talent, he recalls, “I’ve been hurling in throw-ins since primary school.” His extraordinary skill has not gone unnoticed, with many dubbing him the “Rory Delap of the National League.” However, Tonks humorously adds, “I wouldn’t mind his wages from a few years ago!”

Opponents Beware

As teams prepare for Tonks’ arrival, Huddersfield will certainly be on high alert. After a tough 7-0 loss to Barnet in August, Tamworth has shown resilience and the ability to compete at a higher level. Tonks noted, “When we played Barnet, their players were actually told NOT to give away any throw-ins in their half. Fair play to them, I don’t think I took one in the 90 minutes!”

Natural Talent Meets Hard Work

Despite his impressive skills, Tonks claims he has never been formally trained in his technique. “It’s just natural to me,” he explains. “I just do the same weights as the other lads.” His commitment is evident, as he and his teammates often rise for early morning gym sessions before heading to work.

Goals That Go Viral

Tonks is not just a threat from throw-ins. He recently scored a jaw-dropping goal from the halfway line for Stourbridge that went viral, racking up a million views in just a week. “You can hear team-mate Luke Benbow’s mum screaming on the audio. That’s a funny listen on YouTube,” he laughs. He also netted a spectacular stoppage-time winner for Tamworth this season, proving he can deliver on multiple fronts.

Playing with Heart

Football is deeply personal for Tonks, especially after losing his grandfather. “It was special because it was my first goal after my grandad passed away,” he recalls. “He used to love coming to watch me.” With his grandad in mind, Tonks hopes to score again against Huddersfield, saying, “Hopefully big Dave is looking down and I can get another goal for him.”

A Wolves Fan with a Grudge

As a lifelong Wolves supporter, Tonks has a score to settle with Huddersfield. He vividly remembers watching Aaron Mooy score two free-kicks against Wolves back in 2018. “I’ll never forget that so I owe them one,” he says. With confidence in his home ground, he believes Tamworth can take on anyone at The Lamb.
