MESUT OZIL has been slammed as “an absolute disgrace” and “like a bad smell at the club” by former Chelsea star Chris Sutton.
The midfielder is yet to feature since the Premier League returned following it’s coronavirus suspension.
He failed to even make the nine-man bench for the first game back, a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City.
The he watched on as an unused sub as the Gunners fell to a bad-tempered 2-1 loss at Brighton this weekend.
It has understandably led to increased rumour that the 31-year-old will finally leave the Emirates this summer.
And Sutton, speaking on BBC Football’s Daily Podcast, delivered a withering assessment of Ozil‘s contributions – or lack of them.
He said: “I don’t feel sorry for Arsenal at all. I feel sorry for the fans, I feel sorry for Arteta, but I think he’s been so badly let down.
“Mesut Ozil couldn’t get on the bench and they had nine players on the bench.
“Arteta criticised his attitude in training. He’s on £350k a week. He’s an absolute disgrace, he has to give Arteta far more than that.
“Ozil is like a bad smell at the club, he really is. He is a nightmare for Arteta. A guy who is eating up massive, massive wages at the club who isn’t committed.
“Ozil owes Arsenal far more than he has actually given.”
With 12 months left to run on his deal, Ozil is reportedly happy to stay in North London no matter what.
ESPN describe the Gunners as keen to get rid of the 31-year-old, in order to free up some much-needed cash.
Ozil will earn a basic salary of £18million in the coming year and is comfortably the club’s top earner.
That breaks down as £50,000 per day and a healthy £2,083 for every hour that passes between now and his contract’s June 30 2021 expiry date.
There was fury among fans when it emerged that he was the only senior star to reject a 12.5 per cent pay cut requested by the board amid the coronavirus pandemic.
