The ex-Bournemouth boss is set to sign a two-and-a-half-year contract following talks with Toon’s Saudi-led owners.
Eddie Howe is set to become Newcastle manager after impressing in interview
An announcement is expected on Friday and Howe could be in the dugout against Brighton on Saturday.
He was second choice to replace the axed Steve Bruce before main target Unai Emery publicly snubbed the Magpies on Wednesday.
Club director Amanda Staveley moved swiftly after that humiliating rejection and reached an agreement with 43-year-old Howe following two days of discussions.
Interim boss Graeme Jones will speak at Friday’s press conference and will be part of the backroom staff.
But Howe will bring his trusty Cherries assistant Jason Tindall with him, as well as former coaches Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone.
Howe has been out of work since leaving the South Coast club in August 2020 following relegation to the Championship.

There were some initial reservations from members of the consortium about the end of his Bournemouth reign.
But he impressed during his interview last Sunday with his vision for the club and is now tasked with sparking an immediate upturn on the pitch with Toon six points off safety.
Howe was not put off by being overlooked for Emery and has been itching for a return having been out of work for 15 months.
