Contract Renegotiation on the Horizon

Newcastle United are reportedly in discussions to rework Alexander Isak’s contract as they aim to fend off interest from several clubs, including Premier League rivals Arsenal. The Swedish forward, whose current deal runs until the summer of 2028, has caught the eye of many with his exceptional performances this season.

Champions League Clause Could Impact Wages

It has come to light that several Newcastle players, including Isak, have clauses in their contracts that would see their wages reduced if the team fails to secure Champions League qualification. This clause was a strategic move by the club’s former sporting director, Dan Ashworth, who is now set for a new role at Manchester United.

Isak’s Impressive Season Sparks Interest

With Newcastle’s chances of making it into the restructured Champions League next season looking slim, the club is eager to negotiate a new deal that would offer Isak a significant wage increase, potentially aligning his earnings with those of Newcastle’s highest-paid player, Bruno Guimaraes.

Barcelona and Arsenal Eyeing £63m-Rated Isak

Both Barcelona and Arsenal are reportedly interested in the Swedish striker, valued at £63 million, with Champions League football being a key lure. With Barcelona considering moving on from veteran Robert Lewandowski and Arsenal potentially looking to offload Gabriel Jesus, Isak has emerged as a coveted target.

Newcastle’s Stance on Potential Transfer

Despite the interest from other clubs, Newcastle value Isak at around £90 million and would be hesitant to let him go. The financial constraints faced by Barcelona could make it difficult for them to compete with Arsenal should a bidding war ensue.

Injuries Haven’t Slowed Isak’s Scoring Prowess

Since his transfer from Real Sociedad in August 2022, Isak has been plagued by injuries, missing two months this season due to groin issues. Nevertheless, his tally of 21 goals in 34 games is a testament to his quality, particularly with time spent sidelined.

Golden Boot Ambitions Still Alive

With 17 league goals to his name, Isak is in contention for the Premier League Golden Boot, trailing the current joint-leaders by just three goals. With six games remaining, he remains a strong contender alongside Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke.
