Newcastle United news: Mills reacts to Dubravka injury update

Danny Mills fears for Newcastle United after it was reported that Martin Dubravka has suffered a fresh injury setback.

The former Leeds and Manchester City defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, laude the “absolutely superb” 31-year-old who he believes is the Magpies “best player”.

The Times claim that the Slovakia international has suffered a setback in his recovery from an operation on his heel and looks unlikely return until December.

Dubravka, who made more saves than any other goalkeeper in the Premier League last season, injured his heel while on international duty at the back end of August.

Karl Darlow has been given the gloves in the Slovakian’s absence and started in the 4-1 loss against Manchester United on Saturday.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on the latest injury news coming out of St. James’ Park, Mills said: “He is a big loss for Newcastle.

“He was magnificent last season. Absolutely superb.

“Over the course of the last 10 years we have seen the rise of the goalkeeper. It is such an important role.

“He has made some vital saves and has been crucial to that team. Dubravka’s a fantastic shot-stopper. He has been probably their best player.

“A good goalkeeper gives the defence confidence and belief and allows them to play with freedom and confidence. That flows all of the way through a team. It is so important to have a good goalkeeper.”
