Noel Whelan insists that Newcastle United fans have “gone through enough” as new takeover talks are reported.
The former Premier League striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, admits it is “astounding” that the Magpies could face another boardroom saga after the Amanda Staveley-fronted bid was put on ice.
The Telegraph report that talks between American tycoon Henry Mauriss and Mike Ashley are ongoing and that negotiations have been speeding up since the start of the month.
The newspaper states that there is still work to be done on a deal but that there is optimism Mauriss could take charge before the start of the new season.
Whelan insists that supporters at St James’ Park have already been put through the wringer and that the last thing they need is more uncertainty.
Whelan told Football Insider: “You’re looking at a person coming into the club not knowing about them, up in the air.

“Newcastle fans have gone through enough so far so to have another one like this, it’s quite astounding really.
“We’ll have to see where this one pans out, Steve Bruce has been a revelation there, quite frankly. I think there were a lot of eyebrows raised when he got the job from the Newcastle fans but all credit to Steve Bruce.
“What he’s managed to squeeze out of these players and the team he’s assembled to be competitive again with the bigger sides or the sides with more money to spend, that’s been the one shining light.”
The Magpies finished 13th in the Premier League last season, ahead of the likes of West Ham and Crystal Palace.
Ashley has been in charge on Tyneside since 2007.
