Since their Saudi-backed takeover in 2021, Newcastle United has struggled to navigate the Premier League’s financial rules. The club’s inability to secure substantial commercial deals has left them in a precarious position. Borson pointed out that the club is effectively “stuck,” unable to capitalise on potential partnerships that could bolster their revenue streams.
The recent summer transfer window saw the departure of promising talents Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, a clear indication of the financial constraints the club is facing. These challenges have been exacerbated by the associated party transaction (APT) rules, which have restricted Newcastle’s ability to forge lucrative agreements with their Saudi ownership group.

In a similar vein, Manchester City recently took legal action against the Premier League regarding the APT rules. An arbitration hearing in June led to two aspects of these regulations being deemed unlawful, prompting top-flight clubs to approve key changes at a meeting in London on 22 November. However, these modifications are unlikely to provide Newcastle with the flexibility they desperately need to improve their financial standing.

Newcastle’s latest financial accounts revealed that revenue rose to £250.3 million for the 2022-23 season. CEO Darren Eales expressed optimism in July, stating he expects the club to achieve a record high, surpassing £300 million in revenue for the last season. However, even with this potential increase, the club is still far from the £450-500 million threshold needed to support a competitive wage bill.
Wage Bills and League Position
Borson emphasised the intricate relationship between wage bills and league performance, noting that Newcastle’s wage bill must exceed £300 million to compete effectively. “The only way of getting a wage bill from a PSR perspective of over £300 million is if you have got turnover over £450-500 million,” he explained. This stark reality presents a significant challenge for the club as they strive to balance financial regulations with their aspirations for success.
Matchday Revenue and Ticket Pricing Issues
The north-east club faces additional difficulties with matchday revenue, which has been described as “disappointing.” Borson pointed out that clubs outside of London, particularly in the north, are often limited in their ability to charge higher ticket prices compared to their southern counterparts. This discrepancy further hampers Newcastle’s revenue potential, especially as they look to fill St James’ Park with fans eager to support the team.
No European Competition This Season
Compounding these challenges is the absence of European competition this season. The lack of broadcast revenue from continental tournaments means Newcastle is unlikely to come close to the £450-500 million revenue target that experts deem necessary for sustainable growth. Without the financial boost that European football typically provides, the club’s ambitions may remain just out of reach.
