The FIFA World Cup in Qatar has entered its knockout stage this weekend and one of the particularly interested parties will be the 1998 FIFA World Cup winner with France and manager of the Crystal Palace: Patrick Vieira, born in Senegal.

France, Senegal and England are all in the last 16 on Sunday with England facing Senegal and France facing Poland.

The African champions have a number of players from the Diambars FC academy in Saly, Senegal, set up by Vieira in 2003.

“We are proud and very happy to have those players who achieved it, but there is a beautiful story behind it and we need more time to talk about it,” the 1998 FIFA World Cup winner said of the trio of players who had graduated. from Diambars to the Senegal team.

“Everyone will expect France and England to be in the quarter-finals, but there is a reality on the pitch,” Vieira added of the possibility of France facing England in the quarter-finals should they both win.

“Until then, England and France will face two different challenges, but two difficult ones. It won’t be easy for England and neither will it be for France. It can be a quarter-final between these two nations and [if so] I know who I’m going to support.”

So have Vieira and his backroom staff changed routines at their Beckenham training ground to watch the games?

“The games are in the canteen and everyone is watching. This is our job and we love watching football but we don’t adapt [around it] on the training ground,” Vieira told the South London Press.

“[If] it will be France v England in the quarter-finals, we will [then]we will make it [happen].”
