Promotion Hero Set for Contract Extension
Portsmouth FC are reportedly on the brink of extending the stay of defensive stalwart Conor Shaughnessy, with negotiations reaching an advanced stage. The club is eager to secure the 27-year-old’s services with a new and improved contract ahead of his current deal’s expiration in June 2025.
Shaughnessy’s Impact at Fratton Park
Shaughnessy has been instrumental in Portsmouth’s ascent to the Championship, contributing significantly to the team’s successful promotion campaign last season. The Republic of Ireland youth international has been a mainstay in the team’s defense, making 49 appearances in all competitions since his move from Burton Albion.
From Leeds to Portsmouth: Shaughnessy’s Journey
The Irish centre-back’s career kicked off at Leeds United in 2016, followed by a series of loan spells at Hearts, Mansfield Town, and Burton. A permanent move to Rochdale came in January 2021, after which Shaughnessy joined Burton that summer, racking up 70 appearances before his transfer to Portsmouth.
Portsmouth’s Championship Ambitions
With Shaughnessy’s consistent performances, Portsmouth are keen to cement his position in the squad as they gear up for their first season in the Championship in over a decade. Manager John Mousinho is assembling a strong team, underscored by the recent acquisition of defender Jordan Williams, as the club aims to make a mark in the second tier.
Building for the Future
Portsmouth’s proactive approach in retaining their key players like Conor Shaughnessy, alongside strengthening the squad with new signings, signals their intent to establish themselves in the Championship and build a team capable of competing at the higher levels of English football.
