Rafael Benitez on the verge of Everton job despite fan backlash over former Liverpool manager and ‘concern’ from other board members over appointment – announcement expected next week

Rafa Benitez is on the verge of being appointed the new manager of Everton, talkSPORT understands.

And a deal to bring the former Liverpool boss to Goodison Park looks set to be announced next week.

Benitez spent six years at Liverpool from 2004-2010 and he is now set to join the Blue half of Merseyside

There were doubts over Everton’s controversial move this week with news going quiet.

It is believed Toffees owner Farhad Moshiri was taking time to measure the response from supporters, after an angry backlash following their approach for the ex-Liverpool chief.

X-rated banners have appeared outside Everton’s home ground, with one of the more polite messages to the ex-Reds boss reading: ‘Benitez not welcome’.

Everton’s approach for the Benitez has also split opinion with pundits, with accusations the former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Newcastle United boss uses clubs as ‘stepping stones’ to get bigger jobs.

And it is now understood Moshiri has decided to push ahead with the deal following extended talks with the Spaniard.

However, it appears not everyone at the club is in agreement over the pursuit for Benitez.

Other members of the Everton board are understood to be ‘concerned’ by the approach, especially following the angry response from supporters with volatile banners directed at the ex-Liverpool manager being erected on the gates of Goodison Park.

Moshiri is set to move forward with the appointment of Benitez despite opposition from some of the Everton board

But it appears Benitez has impressed Moshiri enough for the Toffees chief to go ahead, opting to choose the Spaniard over Nuno Espirito Santo, who is now said to be close to the Tottenham job.

talkSPORT’s Alex Crook brought us the latest news on the deal on Friday morning, telling Breakfast hosts Alan Brazil and Ray Parlour:

“I’ve seen this described as ‘the appointment that will divide a city’, but Rafa Benitez is edging ever closer to being named Everton manager.

“And it could happen before the weekend.

“We told you last week that it was very close, but it all went a bit quiet this week – Everton owner Farhad Moshiri bought himself a bit of time as he sucked up the protests from supporters.

Benitez previously branded Everton a ‘small club’ when he was manager of Liverpool

“He was deciding if this was the right way to proceed, but it seems he has decided that will be the case.

“Key to this was, unlike Nuno Espirito Santo who was also locked in talks with Everton, Benitez doesn’t bring the same level of entourage in terms of the number of his backroom staff, he’s happy to work with some of the existing backroom team, including Duncan Ferguson.

“Ferguson is a legend at the club and is adored by Evertonians and Rafa Benitez is clever enough to know that if he can include him in his new-look managerial team, that could win over some of those doubting fans.

“However, I think some members of the Everton board are concerned by the backlash from supporters, we’ve seen some pretty hostile banners erected outside Goodison Park.”
