A Humorous Reflection on a Footballing Career
In a recent chat show appearance, Premier League icon Rafael van der Vaart shared a light-hearted take on what his life might have looked like had he not pursued a career in football. The former Tottenham and Real Madrid midfielder, now 41, entertained fans with his candid response to a question about what “normal job” he would have taken on.
“I’d Probably Run a Weed Shed”
During the discussion with fellow Dutch football legends Wesley Sneijder and Marco van Basten on Ziggo Sport, van der Vaart jokingly stated, “I grew up in a trailer park, so I’d probably run a weed shed.” His comment sent his companions into fits of laughter, with Sneijder and van Basten playfully agreeing that it sounded like a “normal job.”
Fans Join in the Laughter
Viewers were equally amused by van der Vaart’s unexpected honesty. One fan noted the midfielder’s surprise at his friends’ reaction, while another praised his straightforwardness. A third fan remarked on the unique charm of Dutch football legends, highlighting their distinct personalities.
From Humble Beginnings to Football Stardom
Van der Vaart’s journey began in Heemskerk, a town in northern Holland, where he grew up in a trailer park belonging to the Woonwagenbewoners, a cultural minority with connections to Irish travellers. Reflecting on his upbringing, he shared, “That was the way my family lived. My father was born there and it is a lifestyle. Maybe it is not a normal lifestyle but I always liked it.”
A Football Career to Remember
Van der Vaart’s football career is nothing short of impressive. He joined Ajax at the tender age of ten and spent nearly 12 years at the club. Throughout his career, he made over 500 appearances for notable teams such as Real Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur, and Hamburg, netting 171 goals. He also represented the Netherlands 109 times, contributing 25 goals to his national team.
