Rangers rising star Adedire Mebude has accepted an offer to sign for Manchester City as he closes in on a six-figure transfer, Football Insider understands.
This site revealed last week the 16-year-old is expected to join the Premier League giants after snubbing the Light Blues’ offer of a pro deal.
The transfer has now edged a step closer after Mebude accepted City’s offer of a scholarship contract that converts into a professional deal when he turns 17.
Pep Guardiola’s side have also offered to pay a compensation fee to Rangers that may exceed £100,000.
The deal has not yet been finalised but there are only a few minor hurdles to clear before Mebude becomes a City player.
He will initially link up with their academy, where he will look to play for their Under-18s before challenging for their intensely competitive Under-23s side,
The teenager, who is the younger brother of Rangers 19-year-old Dapo Mebude, has risen through the ranks in Glasgow and is a Scotland youth international.
His departure from Ibrox would be a major blow to a club who have seen some stellar talents head south of the border in recent times.
The most high profile of those is Billy Gilmour, who quit Rangers at 16 to sign for Chelsea and was establishing himself in their first team with some outstanding displays before suffering a serious knee injury following the restart.
Football Insider revealed last month that 18-year-old Kai Kennedy has also rejected a new contract with Steven Gerrard’s men to leave his future in Glasgow up in the air.
Rangers have not given up hope of tying Kennedy to a new long-term deal but there is some way to go to convince the youngster.
