Alan Hutton claims that Calvin Bassey is in line to start for Rangers against Celtic if Borna Barisic is not fit enough to play.
The former Gers and Scotland full-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has been left raving over the “outstanding” 20-year-old and insists he could fill the void if the Croatian star does not recover from his injury layoff.
Barisic picked up a knock in the win over Ross County and has missed both of Croatia’s fixtures during the current international break.
Bassey, who made his first start for Rangers in the 5-1 win over Motherwell, replaced the senior Ibrox star for the final 25 minutes in what was Rangers’ final game before Saturday’s Glasgow derby.
Hutton admits he has been mightily impressed by what he has seen from the young defender and admits that while Barisic would be a big loss for Steven Gerrard, it would not be the end of the world.
“There’s Calvin Bassey there, who came in for the Motherwell and I thought was outstanding so it’s not all doom and gloom,” Hutton told Football Insider.
