Rangers news: Hutton reacts to benched players v Livingston

Alan Hutton claims that Steven Gerrard will be struggling to pick his Rangers sides this season thanks to the “excellent” squad depth at Ibrox.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Gers defender and boyhood fan of the club believes that fans are “finally” seeing the 40-year-old’s plan take shape in Glasgow in what is his third season in charge.

Gerrard brought the likes of Kemar Roofe, Scott Arfield, Jordan Jones and Cedric Itten off the bench against Livingston on Sunday, while the likes of Alfredo Morelos, Glen Kamara, Leon Balogun and Borna Barisic were all left unused.

All eight have been regulars among the matchday squads this season, with Barisic, Kamara and Morelos arguably among those Gerrard would pick in his first-choice starting XI.

Hutton believes that the squad depth at Ibrox will be giving the Gers boss a headache week-on-week but that it is a great “problem” to have.

Hutton told Football Insider: “It just shows you how strong they are – arguably, all the ones you’ve mentioned could be starters, on another day they start the game.

“It must be a problem to pick a team at the moment but what a big problem to have. Going into such massive games, being able to say to yourself: ‘Well I can rest two or three players with a view to the next league game or the next European game,’ or however he sees fit.

“He must be really happy with the squad he’s built, they’ve done an excellent job to get to where they are over the last few years. It’s taken its time but I think we’re finally seeing his plan and his team and his squad.”

Rangers are currently unbeaten across all competitions this season and have dropped points just twice in the Premiership.

They sit six points ahead of second-placed Celtic at the top of the league table, although the Bhoys do have a game in hand.
