Rangers news: Hutton tips Gerrard to get best out of target Jacob Murphy

Steven Gerrard has been backed to get the best out of Rangers target Jacob Murphy by Alan Hutton if he was to move for the Newcastle United winger.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Rangers fullback delivered his verdict as it was reported that his old club are keeping tabs on the 24-year-old.

Murphy is understood to be on the top of Gerrard’s wanted list if he was able to move on fringe players Jordan Jones, Jamie Murphy, Brandon Barker or Greg Stewart, according to MailSport.

Newcastle paid £12m for Murphy in 2017 and after spending last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, the winger only has one year left on his Toon contract.

“You’d hope so. He played a lot in the Championship last year. He’s got a lot of experience, he’s quick, he can take players on.

“He went for a lot of money, £12m is a big sum so I think Rangers could get someone of that ilk, it would be a good signing and he would definitely threaten the squad.

“He would add quality but you would have to get him back to his best.

“He’s had a few seasons where it’s not quite worked out. He’s been from pillar to post and not really settled.

“If he could find a home and you could get the best out of him, which I believe Gerrard is capable of doing, then you would have a top quality player there.

“Teams don’t pay that sort of money for you if you’re not a good player. We all know he’s a good player it’s about getting back to that top level that he can get to. It’s whether he can get back to that at Rangers.

“Depending on the fees and stuff, it could be a gamble. We’ll have to wait and see.”
