Rangers news: McAvennie suggests Ibrox title advantage after update

Frank McAvennie has suggested that Rangers will have a psychological advantage in the title race if they win their next three fixtures.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the Celtic legend fears that Steven Gerrard’s side will win their next three games to put significant distance between themselves and the Hoops amid his former side’s lockdown breach.

Celtic defender Boli Bolingoli admitted he played in Sunday’s match against Kilmarnock despite having recently returned from Spain without quarantining.

Subsequently First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon has taken the huge decision to cancel Neil Lennon’s side’s games against St Mirren and Aberdeen.

The Gers play three times before Celtic return to action and if they take maximum points from those fixtures the Bhoys will find themselves 11 points behind their Glasgow rivals by the time they play Dundee United.

McAvennie suggested that such an outcome would place significant pressure on last season’s champions.

“The good thing in football is that if you have a bad game, you do not have to wait long to rectify that but they will have to wait now,” he told Football Insider.

“They would have been looking forward to playing against St Mirren. The boys would have been desperate to get that bad performance against Kilmarnock out of the way.

“I expect Rangers to win their next few games so psychologically it will be a boost to them even with Celtic having the games in hand.”

A 1-1 draw at Rugby Park on Sunday will be Celtic’s last taste of league action until the 22nd of August but will face KR Reykjavik in a Champions League qualifier next week.

The Teddy Bears welcome St Johnstone to Ibrox tonight before games against Livingston and Kilmarnock.

In other Rangers news, Alan Hutton has told Football Insider that barely-seen player has been dazzling Steven Gerrard in training this month.
