Rangers news: Whelan reacts as youngsters depart Ibrox

Noel Whelan has backed Steven Gerrard’s shock decision to let Rangers youngsters Ross McCrorie and Greg Docherty leave the club.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, Whelan says the pair’s departure makes sense for all parties.

McCrorie joined Aberdeen on an initial one-year loan deal with the Dons having an obligation to buy the 22-year-old for £350,000 next summer.

Docherty, 23, followed him out the door joining League One side Hull City for a fee of £400,000, as revealed by Football Insider.

Asked by Football Insider whether he was surprised to see the two youngsters leave Ibrox, Whelan said: “I think with these players now, Steven Gerrard has seen enough.

“Clubs like Rangers can’t afford to keep average players on if they’re not going to cement themselves within a couple of season into that first team.

“It’s all about progression, it’s all about moving forward. You always want to bring players through the set up but if they’re not good enough, you’ve got to let them go and get them off the wage bill.

“Bring in quality, whether it’s signed or it’s through the system and the young players you have at Ibrox now.

“Over a couple of seasons, which is what Steven Gerrard has had now, he’s had a long enough time to look at these players, assess these players.

“If they’re not good enough for the future you might as well let them go now, let them find a club that’s suitable for their ability and let them progress in their own way.

“You’re getting a bit of money off the wage bill and you’re also freeing up space in the squad.”
