Noel Whelan has backed Steven Gerrard’s shock decision to let Rangers youngsters Ross McCrorie and Greg Docherty leave the club.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, Whelan says the pair’s departure makes sense for all parties.
McCrorie joined Aberdeen on an initial one-year loan deal with the Dons having an obligation to buy the 22-year-old for £350,000 next summer.
Docherty, 23, followed him out the door joining League One side Hull City for a fee of £400,000, as revealed by Football Insider.
Asked by Football Insider whether he was surprised to see the two youngsters leave Ibrox, Whelan said: “I think with these players now, Steven Gerrard has seen enough.
“Clubs like Rangers can’t afford to keep average players on if they’re not going to cement themselves within a couple of season into that first team.
