Rangers news: Whelan tips offer of £14m to tempt club into Kent sale

Noel Whelan has claimed that it would be a “big blow” to Rangers to lose Ryan Kent but said that the board would be tempted to sell if an offer of £14million arrived this summer.

The former Leeds United and Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, warned Steven Gerrard that it will be extremely difficult to replace the 24-year-old without splashing the cash.

Kent, who has has three years left on his contract at Ibrox, has started the season in impressive form and scored three goals in five league appearances.

Football Insider revealed yesterday that the Gers have set their sights on a new forward signing as Leeds ready a second bid for the winger.

The Premier League side’s opening offer of £8.5million plus add-ons was rejected by the Glasgow giants.

When asked by Football Insider if the Teddy Bears could afford to lose Kent this summer, Whelan said:

“A £14million bid would be tempting to Rangers, they would have a look at that I am sure.

“But they are a big club and they want to win the title. Steven Gerrard needs Ryan Kent so they will dictate the fee for this player. He is under contract. It would be a big blow to lose him.

“How would you replace him? They may have to pay more money to get a player on a similar level. You could pay less but it would be a risk because that player needs to make a difference throughout the season.”   

When speaking on Leeds’ interest in Kent, Gerrard said: “We have spent two years trying to build something here that is competitive. And he is a big part of that jigsaw.

“So he is someone that we want to fight to keep. But, you know, everyone has a number, a valuation. Right now, where it stands, Leeds are nowhere near that.”
