Rooney faces FA sanction for saying referee should be ‘banned’ over controversial penalty as Derby lose to Swansea

WAYNE ROONEY is facing punishment from the FA after piling into referee Tim Robinson.

Derby lost their trip to Swansea 2-1 but Rooney feels his side could have claimed a draw had Robinson awarded his side a penalty.

Swansea’s Ben Cabango was judged not to have fouled Bartosz Cybulski

With the Rams chasing an equaliser Bartosz Cybulski went for a rebound but appeared to be dragged to the ground by Ben Cabango inside the box – sparking Derby appeals.

Rooney claimed everyone in the stadium could see it was a penalty except the officials.

But the former Manchester United man overstepped the mark by suggesting Robinson should be banned, and he will likely be sanctioned by the FA for his remarks.

Rooney said: “I think everyone in the stadium agrees (it was a penalty), the Swansea manager, the Swansea staff, the Swansea fans, Derby players, staff, fans, everyone saw it was a clear penalty apart from the four officials.

“I have said it time and time again. I understand it is difficult to give it when it is a tight one.

“When it is a clear obvious foul and penalty it leaves a lot of questions I have to ask the officials.

“I hope the referee gets banned and fined because that is not good enough.

“You can ask what do we do, do you get VAR in but the officials are looking at VAR on the screen and they are still getting decisions wrong. So I don’t know where we go.”

The loss leaves Derby on the verge of relegation from the Championship following their 21 point deduction.

Rooney’s side are now nine points off 21st-placed Reading who lost to Cardiff on Saturday.

There are just five games left for Derby to pull off an unlikely escape.
