Tony Cascarino has revealed Sir Alex Ferguson once asked him to tap up one of the game’s biggest legendary players for a move to Manchester United.
And it was only Zinidine Zidane!
It’s that time of year when transfers are the talk of the town with football supporters all over the world, with billions spent, players swapped and new-look teams emerging for the new season.
And talkSPORT host Cascarino insists players and managers are no different.
The England squad, alone, has a host of players linked with big summer moves.
While the futures of Harry Kane and Jack Grealish might be hitting the headlines, Jadon Sancho has been linked with a big-money move to Old Trafford, Ben White could go to Arsenal and there’s sure to be big interest in Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka after his stunning full Three Lions debut.
Cascarino insists the dressing room will be full of transfer talk, with players teasing their teammates about their futures, just as it was during his day.
“International football was full of transfer talk, especially in the boring hours of a locked room and speculation that you might be moving somewhere else,” said the Weekend Sports Breakfast host.
“It was rife, and I can’t imagine it’s any different today, why would it be?
“This is a big time of the season for players, the transfer window, especially if you’re playing well.
“Harry Kane, Jack Grealish, Jadon Sancho, and a good few others!
“They’ll all be having conversations about it, and it isn’t all in depth and it isn’t disruptive for the squad, but they’ll be talking about it.”
Suggesting the Man City players within the Three Lions squad will now be having a word in Grealish’s ear and informally ‘tapping up’ the midfielder, the former Republic of Ireland international revealed the same happened to him during his career.
But it was a very famous manager who asked him to tap up a very famous player on his and Manchcester United’s behalf…
“What some managers do, and I’ll tell you Fergie was the king at this, he’d always somehow find a way to send a message to somebody,” said Cascarino, who spent six years of his playing career in France with Marseille and Nancy.
“I was in a dressing room and met Sir Alex in Marseille, he was my manager for a day in a testimonial, I’m in a dressing room as he says to me, ‘how’s your French?’
“I said, ‘it’s ok’, and he said to me, ‘have a word with the number ten’ and that number ten happened to be Zinedine Zidane!”
Perhaps Tony’s French wasn’t as good as he thought…
