From Toon to Tottenham?
After her recent departure from a prominent role at Newcastle United, Amanda Staveley’s next move in the football world is the subject of much speculation. Despite reports linking her to a potential investment in Tottenham Hotspur, industry insiders are expressing doubts about the likelihood and potential impact of such a move.
A Modest Role Predicted
Finance expert Stefan Borson has cast skepticism on the idea that Staveley, having left her influential position at Newcastle United, would settle for what he predicts to be a “very insignificant” role at Spurs. Staveley, alongside her husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi, previously held a 10% stake in Newcastle after facilitating a £305million takeover by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) in 2021.
Strategic Exit from St James’ Park
The couple has been central to the management of the club since the takeover, but this summer, it has been confirmed that they have stepped away from their roles at the club.
Exploring New Horizons
With Staveley’s investment firm PCP Capital Partners reportedly raising about £500million, Bloomberg suggested on 18 July that she might be eyeing a stake in Tottenham. However, Borson notes that Tottenham’s valuation expectations are significantly higher than what was paid for Newcastle, hinting at a potential mismatch in investment strategies.
Value Expectations and Influence
“It sounds like nonsense to me,” says Borson, dismissing the notion that Staveley would transition from a position of considerable clout at Newcastle to a minor role at another club. He adds, “Everybody in football knows Tottenham is available for investment or a sale at the right price. But they have very significant expectations on value, probably something like eight-to-nine times what Staveley and PIF paid for Newcastle.”
Tottenham’s Takeover Terms
With Tottenham’s terms for investment or a sale being a matter of public knowledge, the feasibility of Staveley securing a stake that would allow her similar levels of influence to her time at Newcastle seems doubtful. Borson concludes, “I think it’s pretty unlikely that she’s come out of Newcastle at whatever valuation she has, where she was clearly very influential and is just going to accept a very insignificant role at Spurs.”
