Sunderland news: Club set to sign Matthews after Bolton exit

Sunderland are set to sign goalkeeper Remi Matthews on a free transfer after his departure from Bolton Wanderers a few weeks ago, Football Insider understands.

The Black Cats have been in the market for a new shot-stopper after former number one Jon McLaughlin left the Stadium of Light to join Rangers this summer.

A source on Wearside has told Football Insider that the club have identified Matthews as an ideal replacement for the Scotland international and have moved quickly to get the 26-year-old snapped up on a free.

The former Norwich City man is out of contract after he left Bolton following their relegation to League Two last month.

He was a mainstay for the Trotters and missed just one of the club’s 34 league games, while he also played in all but one of their cup matches as well.

Matthews joined Bolton from Norwich after he came through the youth ranks in Norfolk, although he never featured for the Canaries before his exit.

He has also spent time on loan at Burton Albion, Doncaster Rovers and Plymouth Argyle and has a total of 70 League One appearances under his belt.

Sunderland manager Phil Parkinson has just 2019 signing Lee Burge as his only senior goalkeeper after McLaughlin moved to Rangers.

The new Ibrox star played all but four of the Black Cats’ league games last season but left the north east for Glasgow at the end of his contract.

Sunderland also have young stopper Anthony Patterson on their books and the 20-year-old featured eight times as an unused substitute during the 2019/20 campaign.
