Kevin Phillips urged Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson to drop Will Grigg for the trip to Oxford United this weekend and start new signing Danny Graham.
The Stadium of Light legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, said that his former club’s form this year has become “very frustrating” and “expects changes” this Saturday.
Grigg, 29, was given the nod ahead of Graham and Charlie Wyke on Saturday as the Black Cats laboured to a 1-1 draw at home to Bristol Rovers.
Graham and Wyke opened their accounts for the season earlier this month in an 8-1 thrashing of Aston Villa’s Under-21s in the EFL Trophy.
Phillips revealed that he would like to see summer signings Graham and Aiden O’Brien, who were signed from Championship sides Blackburn Rovers and Millwall respectively, to lead the attack.
“I would always go with two strikers in that league,” he told Football Insider.
