Sunderland news: Phillips lauds Hume transfer claim

Kevin Phillips ‘loves’ Denver Hume’s reaction to Sunderland potential signing a new left-back this month.

The Stadium of Light legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, said that “there is nothing worse than a player spitting his dummy out” when a new signing arrives to provide competition for places.

Hume, 22, has not missed a minute of action in League One this season with Phil Parkinson’s side recording two wins and two draws in their opening four fixtures.

He is the only recognised left-back at the Stadium of Light currently but the club are expected to strengthen in that area before the domestic window shuts on 16 October.

Hume claimed that he would welcome the addition of a new left-back on Wearside and insisted that competition was a “good” thing.

Phillips applauded the defender’s reaction and said that it shows a lot about his character.

“It is great to hear Hume saying that,” he told Football Insider.

“There is nothing worse than a player spitting his dummy out when the club brings in a player to provide competition in their area.

“I love to hear that. It means he is ready for the fight. Competition is always a good thing.

“It shows what kind of character you are so that proves that Denver Hulme has a good character. That is positive news.”

Speaking on the prospect of a new left-back arriving at the club, Hume said: “I think it’s good for everyone to have competition in the team.

“Competition is really good and if anything it drives you on more to keep playing your best football and do well.”
