Sunderland news: Phillips reacts to update on Marcus Maddison

Kevin Phillips is adamant that Marcus Maddison would be an asset to Sunderland next season after the attacker opened up on a move to the Stadium of Light.

The 2000 European Golden Shoe winner, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that a player of the 26-year-old’s quality would help Phil Parkinson side gain promotion.

Maddison is a free agent this summer after he left Peterborough United upon the expiration of his contract last month.

The attacking midfielder has been very open on social media about about his future plans and appeared flatter by links to Wearside but insisted that he has received no offer.

Phillips stressed the important of this year for the Black Cats and said that promotion was “more critical than it has ever been”.

“He would be an asset to Sunderland in League One, definitely,” he told Football Insider.

“I am surprised to hear that he has no offers, whether that is the truth or not.

They have made a couple of great signings so far but Sunderland need a few more through the door.

“It is such a huge season. This season, for me, is more critical than it has ever been. They need to get out of this league so if they can get a player of Maddison’s quality into the squad it will certainly help them.”

Maddison’s 33 appearances last season yielded an impressive 11 goals and eight assists as the Posh, like Sunderland, narrowly missed out on the play-off spots.

Phil Parkinson has already added Bailey Wright and Aiden O’Brien to his ranks this summer, both have put pen to paper on two-year contracts at the Stadium of Light.

In other Sunderland news, it can be REVEALED that the Black Cats and Fleetwood Town are both in the race to sign defender who’s recently quit Ibrox.
