Final of Valencia reminded West Ham United fans of his will to score by scoring twice in Ecuador’s 2-0 FIFA World Cup victory over hosts Qatar on Sunday afternoon.
Valencia may not have scored many goals at West Ham, but when they did, they were spectacular, important or both!
Signed by Mexican club Pachuca in July 2014, the 24-year-old Ecuador international had finished as Liga MX’s top scorer the previous season.
It took the striker four games to get off the mark in Claret and Blue, with an unstoppable rocket firing into the Hull City net in a 2-2 Premier League draw at the KC Stadium. Further goals at Burnley and Stoke City followed, then in an FA Cup third round replay with Everton at the Boleyn Ground in January 2015, as the South American forged a promising partnership with Diafra Sakho.
However, 2015 proved less productive overall, with just two more Valencia goals in a top-flight home defeat to Crystal Palace and UEFA Europa League qualification with Astra Giurgiu at the Boleyn Ground.
The following year he started in style with two goals in a 3-1 win at AFC Bournemouth – a volley and a free-kick – and two more in a Premier League draw with Manchester City in January . However, these proved to be his ninth, tenth and last in a West Ham shirt.
