Tottenham approach rival figures for reference on major target, as expert suggests Conte, Paratici disagreement

Tottenham Hotspur are making further inquiries into right-back target Pedro Porro by seeking references from those who knew him at Manchester City, but an insider questions whether Antonio Conte is fully on board with the idea of signing him.

Porro is one of the main right-backs linked with Tottenham ahead of the January transfer window. They are looking for an upgrade in Emerson Royal, Matt Doherty and Djed Spence. After facing Porro in the Champions League, the Sporting CP star is on their radar.

Tottenham could give him a second chance to reach the Premier League after he was previously on the books of Manchester City without making a senior appearance.

To do so, they would likely have to meet his €45m (around £39.3m) release clause. At this kind of price, they’ll need to make sure it’s the right profile.

With that in mind, a report from O Jogo has revealed that Tottenham have been closing in on the top Manchester City officials for more information on Porro.

Specifically, they want to assess their physical condition. Since joining Sporting for the 2020-21 season, Porro has suffered eight different injuries.

Tottenham therefore have some concerns about possible recurrences of muscle injuries. Those who have been keeping a closer eye on Porro can help ease their fears or convince them to focus their energies elsewhere.

If they decide to go ahead with a bid for Porro, they are more likely to succeed in the summer. Sporting will be powerless to stop the transfer if Tottenham activate their release clause in January. But if Spurs prefer to pay a lower price, negotiations are more likely at the end of the season.

Fabrizio Romano recently recalled this Manchester City have a buy-back clause in Porro, too. So the situation is not entirely under Spurs’ control.

But they’re still laying the groundwork for a possible deal by getting as much insider information about the Spanish as possible.

Paratici prefers Pedro Porro but Conte’s doubt remains

Tottenham reporter Alasdair Gold has corroborated the idea that Porro’s fitness may not suit Spurs.

Indeed, Gold has suggested that despite Fabio Paratici’s admiration for the 23-year-old, Antonio Conte may be less interested in him.

Gold said on his YouTube channel: “He’s been on Spurs’ shortlist for a while and there’s some indication that Paratici likes him a lot too. The doubts are whether he’s a Conte signing.

“Does he physically fit the mold of a Conte full-back? Look at the players he often has as a winger. They are often tall, able to make crosses from the other side, brave, strong.

“Porro has a lot of qualities, but if he is fit for a Conte full-back…

“With Porro he is a talented player, but I think it remains to be seen whether these doubts about fitness will be too much to make a move or not.”

Despite some setbacks, Porro now has 91 appearances for Sporting. With 10 goals and 18 assists in those games, he is fulfilling his potential.

Only time will tell if Paratici will act on his interest in bringing Porro to the Premier League. After all, Spence’s signing caused some controversy when Conte distanced himself. A repeat would not be a good look.

But Porro has more experience at the highest level, so he might be a better fit. Ahead of any bid, however, Tottenham are getting all the background information they need to be on the safe side.
