Tottenham finalise Hojbjerg deal after breakthrough in talks

Tottenham have agreed to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton in a total deal worth around £45million.

The London club have reached a breakthrough in talks with their Premier League rivals and expect to finalise the capture of the midfielder next week.

A Tottenham source has told Football Insider that Spurs have agreed to pay Southampton an initial £15m for Hojberg.

The fee will be supplemented by performance-related add-ons worth a potential further £4m.

In addition, Tottenham will also hand Hojbjerg a five-year contract worth around £100,000-a-week as well as multi-million pound signing-on fee.

Taking in all costs, the transfer will be worth more than £45m spread over its full term.

That represents a significant outlay for Tottenham but also a saving in one way as Southampton had valued the midfield anchorman at around the £25m mark in January.

Spurs have managed to convince the Denmark international his career is best served quitting a mid-table Premier League club for one with higher ambitions.

He has knocked back multiple Saints attempts to extend his contract, which is due to expire next year and went public with his desire to leave.

Tellingly, he was stripped of the Southampton captaincy by Ralph Hasenhuttl last month and was omitted from the squad for two matches before returning for the last three.

Hojbjerg played a pivotal role in Southampton’s revival either side of the lockdown and started 30 of their 38 Premier League matches this season.

In other Tottenham news, the club are willing to sell international for £2.5m as price tumbles.
