Tottenham news: Danny Mills reacts to Man City interest in Harry Winks

Danny Mills has claimed that Manchester City’s reported interest in Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks makes a lot of sense.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former England international admitted that he was initially sceptical about the speculation, but has been increasingly won over by the prospect of a move.

The Sun have reported that Pep Guardiola’s men are lining up a £40 million bid to take the 24-year-old to the Etihad in the coming weeks.

And after some careful consideration, Mills believes that he would be an ideal fit for City.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “To start with I sort of opened my eyes a little bit. It left me wide-eyed. I thought ‘Really? Harry Winks to Man City?’.

“And then having thought it about it, actually Fernandinho is in the twilight of his career so City need someone.

“Harry Winks, he’s athletic, he’s good at keeping the ball. He’s almost a continuity player at times. He will do what Pep Guardiola tells him to do with no fuss. He will just sit there and keep passing the ball. If he has to sit on the bench, he will sit on the bench. So I sort of get it.

“Is he a Pep-type player? Well yes, he keeps the ball. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him have a five-star performance, but does he fit into Pep’s philosophy? Actually, he probably does.”

Winks has enjoyed a good amount of game time since Jose Mourinho took over at Tottenham, making 41 appearances in all competitions last season.

He established himself as a key figure in the Portuguese manager’s side over the past few months in particular, playing every minute of Spurs’ final six Premier League matches.
