Tottenham news: Mills lauds latest Spurs signing that he wanted at Leeds

Danny Mills has claimed that he wanted new Tottenham recruit Joe Hart at Leeds as he could “still have six years left” at the top of football.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former England international suggested that Jose Mourinho may be signing the 33-year-old to prove a point to Pep Guardiola.

Spurs confirmed on Tuesday that Hart had put pen to paper on a two-year deal in North London following his release from Burnley at the end of June.

The former England number one, who was capped 75 times by his country, made his debut for the Lilywhites yesterday as a second-half substitute in a 3-0 victory over Ipswich Town.

Hart has struggled to settle at a club since Pep Guardiola deemed him surplus to requirements at the Etihad upon his arrival to Manchester City in July 2016.

When asked by Football Insider if he believed Joe Hart to be a clever piece of business by Spurs, Mills said: “Without a doubt that is a smart signing.

“I said all along that I wanted him at Leeds. He is only 33 so he could have six years left. Goalkeepers easily go into their late thirties. He is unbelievably fit because he looks after himself incredibly well.

“When he first came into Manchester City he was working with Eric Steele, an incredible goalkeeper coach who has brought on David De Gea as well.

“Pep decided to bin him for no reason whatsoever. You wonder if that is Mourinho going, ‘Well, you did not want him but I will have him and prove a point.’

“Hart’s work rate and dedication is incredible. He also adds to the home grown quota which is a bonus.”
