Tottenham news: Robinson reveals Wembley fear after stadium update

Paul Robinson has warned Spurs that “there is a fine line” after plans to increase the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium’s seating capacity were revealed.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former England number one said that the club must remember that “they struggled to fill Wembley when they were not playing well”.

Sky Sports reported this week that the London club have been given permission by Haringey Council to increase the capacity of their stadium by more than 500 seats.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy

It will see the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium’s capacity increase from 62,303 to 62,850 – the ground will remain the second biggest in the Premier League.

The plans have emerged amid the Coronavirus pandemic with the club looking to carry out the required work while fans are still unable to attend football matches.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the news, Robinson said:

“It just goes to show the size and the stature of the club and just how far they have come in recent years.

“They have the world’s best stadium and football club’s are becoming more of a tourist attraction. People are going to want to come and see the best stadium of the world and naturally that will increase the fan base.

“I am not surprised that they want to extend it because they could fill whatever size stadium they like so long as the team is playing well.

“But we must remember that they struggled to fill it at Wembley when they were not playing well. There is a fine line.”
