Tottenham news: Whelan reacts as Spurs block Clarke exit

Noel Whelan believes Tottenham should have let Jack Clarke leave on loan before Friday’s domestic transfer deadline.

The former Leeds United and Coventry City striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists the promising winger needs regular game time at a competitive level rather than with the under-23s.

As revealed by Football Insider, Spurs blocked a last-gasp loan move for the 19-year-old despite plenty of interest from Championship sides.

Clarke is yet to play for Tottenham and spent last season out on loan at both Leeds United and Queens Park Rangers in the second tier.

Whelan admits he thinks the young winger is now going to struggle for any meaningful action and that the north Londoners should have given him the green light to leave temporarily once again.

Whelan told Football Insider: “He really needs game time and proper game time out on loan, I would have said.

“Is he going to be thrown into the first-team? I don’t think so, I very much doubt that. I think they’re trying to see if he’s the real deal or not and if the money they’ve paid for him is worth it. This is an assessment time for Jack Clarke and a big period of his life.

“There’s definitely talent there. Can he rise up and shine and show that the money they paid for you is the quality that the money is worth?”

Clarke joined Spurs for an initial £9.5m rising to a potential £13m from Leeds last summer and was sent back on loan to Elland Road.

However, he managed to make just three appearances with the Whites before he joined QPR in January where he played a further seven times.

In other Tottenham news, the club were braced for up to FIVE senior star exits on deadline day.
