Tottenham news: Whelan warns Spurs facing loss on Aurier

Tottenham will do well to break even on the sale of Serge Aurier this summer, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Premier League striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, claims that the 27-year-old is currently worth around £20million but that his value could plummet over the next 12 months.

The Mirror report that Tottenham are willing to sell Aurier this summer and value the Ivory Coast at around the £35million mark.

BBC Sport report that the Ivory Coast international cost Spurs £23million from PSG back in 2018.

Whelan believes that it would be “decent business” if the Lilywhites could recoup their original fee and warn they could face taking a significant hit if the right-back continues to put in such inconsistent performances.

Whelan told Football Insider: “It’s a lot of money for a player that’s not really hit the heights. I think they’re grasping at straws with that, Tottenham. It’s certainly not going to be for £35million.”

“I think it’s going to be more around the £20-22million, to be honest – if that. I think if you can get close to what you paid, that’s a good bit of business.

“That’s what you’ve got to look at – when someone’s not worked out at a football club and not played up to the standard you’re expecting, if you can still get close to what you paid for, that’s decent business because his performances could go down to about £15million and then you are taking a bigger hit.”

Aurier has a total of 83 appearances under his belt for Spurs to date, as well as 60 caps for the Ivory Coast.

He played 42 times across all competitions last season with little competition among the squad for the right-back role.
