Legal Battle Over VAR Technology

In a dramatic turn of events, UEFA has emerged victorious in a legal tussle that allows them to use Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology to monitor offsides during the European Championship. This comes after a lawsuit was filed by a Dutch company, Ballinno, which accused UEFA and Kinexon of infringing on its patented offside detection technology.

Last-Minute Court Decision

With the tournament’s kickoff looming, the injunction sought by Ballinno was dismissed by a Hamburg court on Monday. Although the judges did not immediately provide their reasoning, their decision enables UEFA to proceed with the implementation of VAR without the threat of major disruption or embarrassment.

Patent Dispute Details

Ballinno’s claim centered around a patent they received 13 years ago for a “method and system for detecting an offside situation”, involving a chip in the football and an earpiece for officials. Despite the setback, Ballinno still has the option to appeal the judgement at the Unified Patent Court Court of Appeal, though it is unlikely to impact the current tournament’s use of the technology.

UEFA’s Confidence Amidst Dispute

UEFA expressed their lack of concern over the lawsuit, moving forward with their plans for the tournament. The technology in question was also utilized during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar without challenge from Ballinno.

VAR at Euro 2024

The European Championship is set to feature VAR technology in every match, with a team of one VAR and two assistant VARs per game. This is a slight reduction from the three assistants used at Euro 2020. UEFA’s regulations also include the use of stadium big screens to display VAR replays and decisions to fans, ensuring transparency during the matches.

The Role of VAR in Modern Football

VAR has become an integral part of football, assisting referees in making accurate decisions during fast-paced games. It can be used to review goals, penalty incidents, red cards, and cases of mistaken identity. The system functions through either a referee’s request for a review or an alert from the video assistant to the referee. With access to multiple camera angles, the VAR team plays a crucial role in the outcome of crucial football moments.

Global Adoption of VAR

The use of VAR is widespread, with nearly 60 leagues and various domestic cup competitions incorporating the technology. It is also a staple in major continental club competitions such as the UEFA Champions League and the Europa League, as well as in significant national tournaments around the world.
