Unbeaten run rolls on for Southampton despite late equaliser

KATIE Wilkinson struck again but a late equalizer from Blackburn Rovers denied Saints Women all three points on the road in a 1-1 draw.

The veteran striker had put Marieanne Spacey-Cale’s side ahead early in the second half at Ewood Park, having opened her Saints account with a hat-trick last time out.

St Mary’s were on course for a fifth straight clean sheet and a fifth straight Championship win when Rovers equalized with just five minutes to play.

It means promotion rivals London City Lionesses put distance between the sides in the top three, with a visit to the Dartford outfit in two weeks’ time.

Wilkinson and Beth Lumsden had both fired wide with first-half chances, while another effort was well wide of Lancashire.

It took just over 10 minutes into the second half for former Oxford United ace Lumsden to cut down double Championship goalscorer Wilkinson for the opener.

Rovers’ equalizer came in the 85th minute and a double substitution from Spacey-Cale seconds later was not enough to restore the one-goal lead.

The result means that the Saints remain unbeaten in eight championship games – since the first day of the season – with 18 points from nine.
