During a tense Copa America group stage encounter, Uruguay’s Maximiliano Araujo experienced a frightening incident that required immediate medical attention. The 24-year-old winger, playing under coach Marcelo Bielsa, was involved in an on-pitch collision that saw him exit the game prematurely.
Araujo Stretchered Off with Neck Brace
The incident occurred in the 23rd minute when Araujo, in a bid to gain possession, collided with teammate Ronald Araujo and USA’s Tim Ream. The impact caused him to fall and strike his head on the ground, resulting in his neck jolting. Teammates and medical staff rushed to his aid, with Araujo being stretchered off in a neck brace. Despite the concern, he managed to give the crowd a reassuring thumbs-up as he was taken off the field.
Immediate Replacement and Post-Match Update
Cristian Olivera of Los Angeles FC was brought on to replace the injured Araujo. Following the match, Uruguay’s football federation provided an update via social media, stating that Araujo was in stable condition but would undergo further medical evaluation to assess the extent of his head injury.

Despite the unsettling event, Uruguay triumphed with a 1-0 victory over the USA, courtesy of a goal from Mathias Olivera in the second half. The win ensured Uruguay’s progression to the knockout stages of the Copa America, while the USA was regrettably knocked out of the competition.
