Arsenal: Mikel Arteta turns to Real Madrid talent to build winning mentality by Kian Long

If Manchester United fans needed more reasons to dislike Virgil van Dijk, here it is.

Manchester United are rumored to be interested in signing Cody Gakpo. And why wouldn’t they be? The Dutch forward has performed amazingly at this year’s World Cup and is certainly catching the world’s attention.

The interest, however, is long-standing. As rumored in the summer transfer window, Manchester United toyed with the idea of signing Gakpo, but ultimately chose not to.

Virgil van Dijk talks to Cody Gakpo about not signing for Manchester United

The Express has confirmed that it was Virgil van Dijk, the Liverpool defender, who said his fellow international was not signing for Manchester United. In a press conference, the Dutch defender stated that he would like to see Gakpo play for Real Madrid, because he is a level above Manchester United. He went on to say that Gakpo had a better chance of succeeding at a top club.

The Red Devils won’t like this, but Virgil van Dijk talks nothing but facts. When we assess these situations, it is important that we are neutral and impartial: United are not the club they used to be. And they are a long way from reaching that level again.

Put yourself in Gakpo’s mind: you’re a young, up-and-coming talent with the world at your feet. You are coming off the back of a fantastic tournament where you played well, several European giants are approaching you to sign for them.

Unless you’re completely biased and out of touch, you won’t pick Manchester United. You will choose a club that is on an upward trajectory and that plays at the highest level of European football. I know I would, anyway.

What do you think of Virgil van Dijk’s comments on Gakpo’s future?
