Davies Calls for Johnson’s Club Form to Shine for Wales
As Wales gears up for a crucial Nations League clash against Turkey, defender Ben Davies is urging teammate Brennan Johnson to carry his impressive club form into the international arena. The 23-year-old forward has been in scintillating form for Tottenham Hotspur, netting eight goals in his last 14 matches, including a remarkable streak of six consecutive goals. However, when it comes to international duty, Johnson has only found the net four times in 31 appearances.
Settling into the International Fold
Davies, who is set to earn his 91st cap for Wales, believes that Johnson is finally finding his footing on the international stage. “When you come into the team at international level, it does take a bit of time to get going,” he explained. “But now Brennan’s got a pretty settled position in the team. We know how dangerous he can be, and if we want to be successful, he’s definitely going to be a big part of that.”
Johnson’s pace and positioning make him a nightmare for defenders, and Davies is excited about the potential impact he could have in today’s match. “He’s a proper difficult opponent,” he added. “The moment you switch off, he can take advantage because he’s so disciplined in his timing.”
Injury Woes and Team Dynamics
With Kieffer Moore sidelined due to a calf injury, Johnson will lead the Welsh attack against Turkey. Davies expressed his delight at Johnson’s recent success, stating, “It was a matter of time before it all clicked. He creates chances and always looks threatening. If he keeps putting the ball in the back of the net, then that’s all we can ask for.”

Davies Reflects on His Roots
As he prepares to lead his country, Davies hasn’t forgotten his beginnings. The Tottenham defender reminisced about his time training in local parks and beaches during his youth at Swansea City’s academy. “Most of us came through that academy, and it wasn’t like the one they have today,” he recalled. “We were training a couple of times a week in the evening, anywhere we could get a pitch. It wasn’t the luxury that some of the academy facilities are now, but it was an amazing time.”
Davies highlighted the importance of remembering where one comes from, noting that many players from the Swansea academy are now integral to the Welsh national team. “The club has done pretty well, and you are seeing those boys still there as the heart of the Swansea team,” he said. “It’s a proud place to come out of.”
Chasing Records and Milestones
As he approaches a significant milestone in his own career, Davies is keenly aware of the legacy he is building. While he is just one cap behind legendary goalkeeper Neville Southall, he acknowledges that Gareth Bale’s record of 111 caps is a daunting target. “I’m proud of my number of caps. Playing for Wales is a big honour,” he said. “When I started as a 19-year-old, it would have been an absolute dream to get this many.”
Looking ahead, Davies aims to continue representing Wales for as long as possible, driven by his love for the game and his country. “Injuries permitting, I want to play for Wales as much as I can. That’s my mentality,” he affirmed.
Aiming for Promotion
Wales is currently unbeaten in four matches under new manager Craig Bellamy, and Davies is optimistic about their prospects for promotion to League A. “It’s been a successful campaign so far,” he stated. “We’re going into the games looking to try and win the group — that has to be the aim.”
With a talented squad and a strong sense of camaraderie, the Welsh team is poised to make a significant mark in the Nations League, and all eyes will be on Johnson as he looks to replicate his club success on the international stage.
