Watford midfielder Cleverley agrees new contract – EXCLUSIVE

Tom Cleverley has agreed the terms of a new Watford contract, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The 31-year-old finalised discussions yesterday with the Championship club over an extension to his current deal expiring in 2022.

A Watford source has told Football Insider that Cleverley’s new contract will run for three years until the summer of 2023.

 

It comes after this site broke the news a fortnight ago that Cleverley had opened talks on a new Hornets agreement.

The central midfielder has started four of Watford’s five Championship fixtures this season, captaining the side in them in the absence of Troy Deeney.

He is regarded by the club as a key player in their hopes of instant promotion back to the Premier League.

The 13-times England international signed for Watford in an £8.4million deal after a successful loan spell at the beginning of 2017.

He has made 118 appearances in total for Watford, which have yielded 14 goals and 11 assists.

Cleverley has played under seven managers during his time at Vicarage Road with the latest, Vladimir Ivic, appointed Nigel Pearson’s successor in August.

Cleverley is an experienced campaigner who graduated from the Man United academy to play 79 times for the club and has also had spells at Everton, Aston Villa, Leicester City and Wigan Athletic.

His new deal, which could be announced in the next 24 hours, will keep him at the club until just a few months short of his 34th birthday.
