Fulham Football Club have set their sights on signing Ajax centre-back Calvin Bassey, reports Soccernet.ng.
According to The Athletic, the west Londoners have tabled a staggering £15 million (equivalent to ₦15.5 billion) bid to Ajax for the Nigerian defender.
Bassey, who previously played for Rangers, had a decent debut season for the Dutch giants, making 39 appearances.
His £20million move from Rangers to Ajax last summer made him the most expensive Nigerian defender in history.
Although he still has four years left on his current contract with Ajax, he is believed to be available for a move during this summer’s transfer window.
Earlier this week, reports in the Dutch press indicated that Ajax had rejected a bid from Brighton and Hove Albion for Bassey.
The current Dutch champions are reportedly looking for an offer of around £20m to consider a sale. So far, they have not responded to Fulham’s formal offer.
Bassey, who came through Leicester City’s youth system, is now 23 and has caught the eye of Fulham as they look to bolster their central defensive options ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign.
During his time in Glasgow, Bassey made 65 appearances over two seasons for Rangers, contributing to their success in winning the Scottish double and reaching the Europa League final.
It is worth noting that the powerful defender, born in Italy, is also capable of playing at left-back, and is believed to be keen on a return to England.
Bassey already has ten senior international caps to his name, and made his international debut in a World Cup qualifier against Ghana last year.
