Whelan raves as Leeds linked with swoop for 'quality' PL midfielder

Noel Whelan has admitted he would “love” to see Leeds sign Matty Longstaff this summer, after the Whites were linked with a move for the Newcastle midfielder.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, insisted he’s a player that Marcelo Bielsa can “get the best out of.”

According to The Telegraph, Leeds United have now joined the race to sign Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff, who will be available for free when his contract expires this summer.

Whelan declared he’s a big admirer of the 20-year-old and suggested he knows “what the Premier League is about.”

“We know he’s got talent, no doubt about it from watching him at Newcastle,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“I just think Newcastle have left it a little bit too late, they had all their cards on the fact that they were going to have the takeover done.

“Now they’ve actually put themselves into a bad position where they could lose their players for nothing.

“I would love to see him at the club. Again, he’s one of those players that I think Marcelo Bielsa would improve and get the best out of.

“He’s at the right age, he’s got aggression, an eye for goal and is calm and collected in possession.

“I don’t think you can have enough good quality players when you’re in the Premier League, especially when you’re newly promoted. He knows what it’s all about as well.”

Longstaff was born in Rotherham, so there may be the temptation for him to return to Yorkshire ahead of Leeds’ first Premier League seasons for 16 years.

The midfielder has only managed nine Premier League appearances for Newcastle, but has managed to find the net twice. Both of his career strikes came against the Whites’ fierce rivals Manchester United.
