Liverpool said in a statement: “Jurgen Klopp will miss Liverpool’s Premier League meeting with Chelsea on Sunday after returning a suspected positive COVID-19 test result.

“The Reds manager, who reported mild symptoms ahead of the fixture, is now isolating.

“Assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders will therefore lead the team for the 4.30pm GMT kick-off at Stamford Bridge.”

Who is Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders?

Pepijn ‘Pep’ Lijnders is the current assistant manager of Liverpool, having been at the club since 2018.

Lijnders was born in Broekhuizen, Holland in January 1983, making him 38 years old.

The Dutchman started his coaching career at PSV Eindhoven and then Porto in 2006, before joining Liverpool in 2014 to work under Brendan Rodgers.

He initially left the Reds in January 2018 to take the managerial job at Dutch second tier side NEC, but he was sacked later that year in May after they failed to gain promotion to the Eredivisie.

Lijnders then returned to Liverpool a month later and worked as part of the coaching staff to win their sixth Champions League in 2019 AND first league title in 20 years in 2020.

Liverpool describe Lijnders as a “a thoughtful student of the game” who had helped oversee the progress of stars Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ben Woodburn.
